Joan Crawford won an Oscar for her performance in this dark “film noir”. Ann Blyth plays her spoiled, snotty daughter who laughs about blackmailing a man for money then harshly insults and humiliates Mildred.
After the publication of the book “Mommie Dearest”, Ann was often asked what it was like to slap Joan Crawford. She described they actually slapped each other (in an earlier scene, Mildred slaps Veda) making it quite dramatic and realistic. She would go on to say the kindest words about Joan and working with her. Ann Blythe was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Mildred Pierce – one of my favorite films starring Joan Crawford.
But watch the clip to see how the drama plays out between Veda and Mildred – gasp!
